fibonacci

Ito ‘yung series of numbers where in the next number is the sum of the last two numbers.

0 1 1 2 3 5 18 13 21…

Bukod sa applications nito sa mga nerd stuff, the Fibonacci sequence is closely related sa golden spiral:

facts only

I read this comic some time ago — tungkol siya sa A Series Sizes ng mga papel — and I was like “wow cool, sinadya ba nila ito?

Nu’ng una, I accepted it at face value. Looks legit naman eh. But for some reason, it piqued my curiosity at gusto ko na tuloy malaman kung totoo ba talaga ito.

Aaaand it is not.

‘Yung unang mali dito is hindi squares ang gamit niya kundi rectangles.

Pangalawa, hinahati lang niya into half ‘yung sizes nito. For a spiral to be golden, ang ratio dapat is 1:1.6 (looking at the previous illustration, 13:21 is 1:1.6)

fake news

Siguro kung may take away ako sa aking pag-fafact check:

  • You should care enough. Enough na kahit wala itong direct impact sa buhay mo (paper sizes and golden ratio, really???), you’d spend some time researching if something is true. Not because you want to prove something or someone is wrong, but because you want to learn.
  • Prepare to be disappointed. I was expecting the comic to be true and I wanted it to be. Unfortunately it was not. Hindi ko pwedeng ipilit kahit ito ang gusto ko kasi, well, mali siya. Irrelevant ang feelings ko dito.
  • Treat it as a mental exercise. The year is 2020 and normalized na ang dad bod kaya nagtataka ako bakit hindi pa rin nanonormalize ang critical thinking. Kung hindi tayo mag-eengage sa ganitong type of activities, paano mahahasa ang utak natin?
